Comes with a fitted F. Bronn wooden box with interior marking specifying "Successeur De J. Darier" which is consistent with mvt signature, mother of pearl inlay to upper lid. Gross weight of assembled watch 107.3 dwt (166.9 g). A superb piece by this esteemed maker that is known for the great diversity of his work. Hilaure Basserau was born in 1743 and became an apprentice to Jean-Antoine Lépine and in later years Basserau was to eventually be named watchmaker to the Emperor Napoleon. The dust-cap inscription of this piece is intriquing as it isn't readily apparent what invention Basserau is referring to. DESCRIPTION: EPW – Unsigned English, lever fusee, 56mm, silver OF original pair cased bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1817, casemaker’s “WR“ marking in cameo, ivory colored enamel dial, KWKS, Savage two-pin lever escapement with D-shaped counterpoise, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, balance cock marked "Improv'd Patent" on table and "Escapement" on foot, gilt locking dust-cap, s#1383. Comes with small stack of papers in case, most being simple plain scraps or newspaper scraps but with one paper being for Metcalf & Stephenson Watchmakers and Jewelers of Ontario. A very rare early example of the Savage two-pin escapement. George Savage developed his lever escapement in about 1815 and emigrated to Canada in 1818 but this escapement continued in use into the 1860s.
