Gross weight of assembled watch 77.1 dwt (119.8 g). Watch is accompanied by an extract from the Lange archives detailing its November 11th, 1886 sale for 457 Deutsche Mark to Otto Fleischhauer along with four other watches of the same calendar series. Watch is also accompanied by a German language magazine with photos and info of a similar example that is nine serial numbers away from the present watch. An extremely rare watch of eye-catching and novel design, this calendar arrangement by Otto Fleischhauer was registered with the Berlin patent office on July 15th, 1883. Fleischhauer contracted the production of a small group of these watches to Moritz Grossmann who initiated their production but passed away suddenly in early 1885. This series of watches was then acquired, finished and sold by A. Lange & Söhne and in total it is believed that only 20 of these Fleischhauer triple-calendar watches were finished and sold under the Lange name. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good calendar function although timekeeping hands should be re-indexed as date advance is occurring as hands pass 5pm rather than at midnight...

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Alexander Watkins, 67 Strand, London, extraordinary miniature detent chronometer made for London's 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition, 25.7mm, 18K gold OF original case bearing London hallmarks for 1850, casemaker's "J W" marking in cameo, ornate engraving detail, signed gold cuvette, engraved gold dial with multicolor floral perimeter detail, KWKS, fusee, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement with capped escape wheel, 19J, free sprung balance with helical hairspring, gilt mvt with 1851 date marking. Watch is accompanied by a fitted silver box with fancy engraved exterior that is contained within a fitted leather outer box with the following text inside its lid "Grand Exhibition of all Nations, in London, 1851. Alex. Watkins, 67, Strand, Inventory & Maker of Chronometers Extraordinary. Class X., No. 85A. The Smallest Chronometer in the World of the 3/4 plate construction, the diameter being but the size of a guinea, with hard Cylindrical Spring and Jewelled in the most costly manner with Ruby's throughout every hole. From the Official Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue." Silver box is marked on the rear with London hallmarks for 1853 and maker's "W N" marking in cameo. A true masterpiece of watchmaking art; the present lot is likely the smallest English pocket chronometer with detent escapement ever produced. This watch was formerly a part of Seth Atwood's Rockford Time Museum collection and it is pictured and described in Anthony G. Randall's "The Time Museum Catalogue of Chronometers" with description including the text "The difficulties of making such a watch were, at the time, really formidable, and the detent escapement must be about at the practical limit for reduction in size." This watch has been in a private collection since its sale at Sothebys in 2004 with the dispersal of the Time Museum collection, and we are pleased to offer it here to the collecting community. CONDITION: Mvt: Presently ticking after a partial winding and a small twist to start but stopping intermittently and although the mechanism is intact and original its components are extraordinarily delicate and extremely prone to being set out of order, we also note that the chain has a tendency to slip from the top turn of the fusee spiral so for this reason the watch should not be fully wound to avoid unnecessary risk of damage, for these reasons and as this watch was produced as a one-off exhibition piece rather than as a timekeeper of ongoing functional utility we can not present this watch as running and can make no claim to its continued functionality...

DESCRIPTION: EPW - C.H. Meylan, Brassus, top-grade tandem-winding minute repeater grande sonnerie clockwatch, 52mm, heavy 18K gold OF original case with initials on rear, Jurgensen-style lips, gold cuvette, under bezel with levers for "Silent - Strike" and "Hours & Quarters - Hours & Half Hours," white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, fully jeweled repeat train and hammers, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#5351 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 87.1 dwt (135.4 g). Push button on crown engages minute repeater on demand. The lever of this example (under the bezel's 2 o'clock position) selects for the occurrence of grande sonnerie striking each 15-minutes or each 30-minutes. The lever at 11 o'clock is used to select chime or silence. We strongly suspect that the ebauche of this piece was likely executed by Louis Audemars, both due to the similarity of its tandem winding system to Audemars products and also due to the overall layout and design similarities to other known Audemars products. Overall, a spectacular and rare piece for the collector; listening to the chime of a clockwatch every 15 minutes is one of the most charming sounds to live and work around. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good repeat function and tone, good grande sonnerie function and tone...

DESCRIPTION: APW – Howard, Davis & Dennison, Boston, serial #3, 8-Day with two mainspring barrels, 19J, 22S, 18K gold original F.D.&Co. (Francis DuBois & Co., Brooklyn NY) HC marked with serial number “3” and the letter “H” in cameo, white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, ornately engraved balance cock with “8 Day” marking, “A L D” marking on dial plate for Aaron L. Dennison, s#3 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 112.2 dwt (174.6 g). A watch of supreme rarity and tremendous historical significance, the Howard, Davis & Dennison eight-day is perhaps the ultimate prize for an American pocket watch collection and these watches represent the origin of both the Waltham and the E. Howard watchmaking ventures. Produced in late 1852 by the Warren Manufacturing Co. in their Roxbury, Massachusetts facility, the Howard, Davis & Dennison was made for presentation to company officers and serial numbers 1 through 17 were reserved for the production of this eight-day model. Per Chris Bailey's "Two Hundred Years of American Clocks & Watches," it is believed that the present example, serial #3, was the personal watch of firm co-founder David P. Davis. The block of serial numbers for eight-day model production was followed at serial number 18 with the beginning of commercial production. The initial commercial production was comprised of "Warren" grade movements with more conventional design of a single mainspring barrel and 30-hour run time, and this design set the pattern for commercial production to follow. In 1853 the Warren Manufacturing Co. renamed itself the Boston Watch Co. and operated under this name until succumbing to financial hardship in 1857, at which point the principals and assets of the firm split and gave rise to the Waltham and the E. Howard watchmaking ventures. In total only seven examples of the Roxbury-made two barrel eight-day watches are known. These are serial numbers 1, 2, and 3 which are marked “Howard, Davis & Dennison” and are the only three watches known with this signature; serial numbers 16 and 17 which are signed “D.B. Fitts, Holliston, Mass” after a Boston Watch Co. employee that is believed to possibly have received this pair of movements in ebauche form in lieu of wages due to the company's financial struggles; and a pair of unserialized prototype examples with calendar dial and of somewhat different movement appearance that were made in 1852 by the Marsh brothers to demonstrate the viability of the eight-day design. The larger central range of serial numbers, 4 to 15, which has not been observed, is strongly suggestive that the majority of blocked serial numbers for the eight-day model were not finished. We believe this is the most historically important American pocket watch to have ever been offered at public sale and we are aware of no previous offerings of any eight-day Roxbury watch at public sale. From the Wing family collection, we are honored to offer this piece. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, serial numbers matching throughout, maltese cross portion of stopworks is absent which is not affecting movement function, two train jewels have been replaced, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scratch below the first n in “Dennison” continuing to edge of mvt, some concentric circular scratches around winding arbors, some typical scattered mild fine scratches elsewhere, some bits of spotting to plate surfaces with the most prominent of these being at the left edge of the barrel bridge; near flawless dial with only a very faint hl in left side of seconds-register, an extremely faint hl below seconds-register near 6:30, and a extremely miniscule edge nick under bezel near 5; case shows light wear, no dents, few slight dings to front, large portion of engine turning detail remaining with loss primarily at rear shoulder and lesser degree of loss at front shoulder, cuvette with evidence of repair at hinge; tight replacement bow, replacement push shows little wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Charles Fasoldt, Rome, NY, co-axial double wheel escapement chronometer, 17J, approximately 20S (46mm dial diameter), silver original F.D. & Co. (Francis DuBois & Co., Brooklyn, NY) HC with 1860 marking inside lids presumably as a date rather than a s#, cuvette engraved "C. Fasold's (sic) Isochronal Patent Chronometer, Rome, N.Y.," white enamel canister style (snap on) dial, KWKS, co-axial chronometer lever escapement with capped escape wheel, gilt mvt marked "C Fasoldt's Patent Febry 1 1859" for Fasoldt's earlier style escapement design with two pallets, s#43. Watch is accompanied by a 1987 letter from Stephen B. Helfant detailing some of the attributes of the present watch. An important and extremely rare watch from Charles Fasoldt's original Rome, New York location; Fasoldt's move from Rome to Albany, New York occured during 1861 and watches made at the Rome location are substantially rarer with only a small number of examples known. Per Mike Harrold's excellent "Charles Fasoldt, Horologist and Inventor" book it is believed that Fasoldt produced somewhat less than 450 watches in total and that the transition from Rome to Albany production occurred at roughly serial number 55. With its notable rare features of original case bearing Rome signature, helical hairspring, and earliest style Fasoldt escapement with two pallets (as opposed to the three pallet design typical of Fasoldt production following the move to Albany), the present watch is an exceptional piece for the early American watch collector. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine and micro-fine scratches, steelwork with some scattered bits of oxide; excellent dial with a small hl above seconds-register; excellent but mismatched hands, hour is plum colored, minute and seconds-hand are blue, minute with slight bend; case with broken or missing lift spring, case shows ample wear, few very small nicks, no dents, engine turning virtually fully lost from lids with only some minimal slight traces remaining evident at a few portions, majority of band with engine turning detail fully lost but a smaller portion of band retains some engine turning detail, cuvette has a very slight bit of side-to-side play at its hinge which shows a small bit of metal loss to the left side of its central tube and also shows repair evident to the outer segments of hinge tube; tight bow, push shows ample wear; plastic crystal with some scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - H. & J.F. Pitkin, East Hartford, Connecticut, s#164, 7J, 52mm case diameter, two-tone brass and white metal purpose made display recase, white enamel dial, KWKS, Massey type III lever escapement with enclosed pallets, lantern pinion train wheels running within countersinks of screws threaded in plates, gilt mvt, s#164. An extremely rare early American-made watch of the utmost historical significance, the brothers Henry and James Flagg Pitkin were the founders of the machine made American pocket watch industry having produced several hundred watches in East Hartford, Connecticut between 1838 and 1841 and these were the first American made watches produced by machinery. It is believed that the initial approximately fifty movements were signed "Henry Pitkin", while the next several hundred were signed "H. & J.F. Pitkin" as on the present example. DESCRIPTION: APW – J.O. & W. Pitkin, East Hartford, Connecticut, lever fusee, 48mm, silver OF original consular case bearing Chester hallmarks for 1833, “HYA“ marking in cameo for casemaker Henry Adamson, cream colored enamel dial, KWKS, lever escapement, gilt mvt with engraved balance cock with bird on its table and "Patent" marking on its foot, gilt locking dust-cap, s#2855 with matching serial number within case. The present watch appears to be a standard English-made import that was sold with the Pitkin marking as a contract name, and the signature of this watch is for John Owen and Walter Pitkin who were the older brothers of Henry and James Flagg Pitkin. John Owen and Walter were in partnership as silversmiths between 1830 and 1840, so the present watch's 1833 date falls in the earlier portion of this operation. This watch makes an excellent contrast with the previous lot, demonstrating the differing directions that the Pitkin brothers took with these older brothers, John Owen and Walter, taking the far more simple route of importing their wares rather than creating their own production as younger brothers Henry and James Flagg achieved. CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start...
CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, mvt hinge portion for case is broken, bright plates with few fine scratches, some punch marks and divot to plate surface in area surrounding click arbor near plate's edge below signature; dial has hl from center to 6, small hl along edge at 2:30, mild bit of brown discoloration within seconds-register; excellent minute hand, fair hour hand with finish loss and seconds-hands with oxide; case must be handled carefully when opened as mvt has a broken upper hinge and there is no hinge pin so the mvt can drop out from case, case shows light wear, an attractive patina, some scratches on fixed cuvette from misguided attempts at opening with a blade, few short scratches at central rear, few shallow dents on rear; bow pivots freely with side-to-side play in pendant sockets; good glass bull's-eye crystal.

DESCRIPTION: Mvt only - E. Howard & Co, Boston, Reed's Chronometer, serial #7, extremely rare, N-S (just over 19S), 15J, "E. Howard & Co, Boston, Reed's Chronometer AD.AHFF" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, Reed's patent detent lever escapement, gilt mvt marked "Reed's Chronometer Pat. Aug 1st 1865, E. Howard & Co, Boston," s#7. A very rare piece featuring George P. Reed's watch escapement which was granted U.S. patent number 49155. This design by Reed was a variation on the Robin escapement that was introduced in 1791 by Robert Robin of France, and in his patent application Reed described his design as being an improvement over an escapement design that was patented in 1844 by Oramel W. Waste. The unusual "AD.AHFF" dial marking of this watch is an alphanumeric code for the year 1866. This particular watch and its escapement function is pictured and described in some detail in Gerrit A. Nijssen's February 2005 NAWCC Bulletin article entitled "George P. Reed & Hiram W. Smith, Two of Greater Boston's Individual Watchmakers" (pages 3-24), and a copy of this bulletin is included with the watch. From the Wing family collection. A very rare piece, only a small number of Jacob Karr’s “American Chronometer” watches are known. Karr was granted U.S. patent number 44317 for his chronometer escapement which he claimed “requires less power to obtain a necessary motion to lock and unlock the escapement wheel of a chronometer, has less friction to overcome, is more compact, more durable, can be made for less money, and is less liable to get out of repair in accomplishing the object of making time accurately than any chronometer-escapement known to me.” This patent was granted on September 20th, 1864 but with an additional note of “antedated September 1st, 1864.” CONDITION: Mvt: GRO apart from some intermittent bits of excess escapement noise...

Hunting case versions with Up/Down wind indicator are extremely rare among American production. DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, 21J Convertible model, Grade 72, 16S, 14K rose gold drum style box hinge HC recase with ornate engraving detail, reverse with a lakeside collonade and chateau set against a mountainous backdrop, front with monogram initials, gold cuvette engraved "W.A. Reinhard," correct white glass-enamel DS dial that friction fits to mvt via a canister style ring, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, gold train wheels, gold balance screws, ornate nickel damascene, s#607280. Gross weight of assembled watch 80.4 dwt (125.0 g). An excellent example of Elgin's top quality watch. A single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 607001 to 608000 was blocked for Grade 72 production but based on known examples we believe the actual production was only approximately 450 made, as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 607001 to 607450 portion of this run. This indicates the likelihood that a bit over half of the blocked serial number range was never completed. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, few small micro-fine scratches; dial near flawless with only an extremely faint short hl above seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows very little wear, no dents, small nick to upper shoulder of front, rear with small ding visible as ripple in reflection of interior surface but with negligible exterior visibility, excellent engraving detail, case shows no visual sign of having held another mvt but is presented as a recase as our consignor notes he paired it with this watch himself; tight bow, crown shows medium wear and small ridge break; good glass crystal.

The single other example of this damascene we've encountered on a Grade 946 movement has also been within this block of 10 serial numbers, and we suspect this group of 10 may very well be the total production of this variant. The case of this watch is not marked with the words "Sangamo Special Model" but is otherwise identical to the typical gold-filled version of this case apart from having hinged rear lids as opposed to a threaded rear lid. Though we had not previously seen an example, the existence of this case and its characteristics is documented by a May 1921 Illinois Watch Co. brochure titled "Selling Prices of Illinois Watches" that illustrates the pyramid bow case style and lists it in both "14K extra weight, solid gold jointed case, with inside cap" for $150 or in gold-filled with "screw back and hinged bezel" for $90. DESCRIPTION: APW - M.S. Smith & Co, Detroit, 15J, 18S, very heavy 18K gold original M.S. Smith & Co signed HC with enameled fancy initials to front, beautifully engine turned inner lids, gold cuvette, chain with bow guards, white enamel SS dial, SW-button-set, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, gold train, gold balance screws, gold regulator index, s#56. The present watch is pictured and discussed in Michael C. Harrold's December 1989 NAWCC Bulletin article "Charles L. Hoyt and His Watches" and a copy of this Bulletin is included with the lot. A very rare maker, the M.S. Smith & Co. was a prestigious Detroit jeweler that between 1868 and 1871 produced a very limited number of watches such as the present example that were of their own design and manufacture. These movements were the creation of Charles L. Hoyt, who following his work for M.S. Smith was to several years later bring this same watch design to the ill-fated Freeport Watch Co. venture. In total we believe that Hoyt produced approximately 60 to 70 watches under the M.S. Smith & Co. name as examples we have observed have had serial numbers ranging between approximately 20 and 80. These watches were proudly advertised by M.S. Smith in Detroit periodicals and were frequently referred to as "Our Watch," and a particularly interesting ad in the April 30th, 1871 "Detroit Free Press" includes the text "We are often asked if we REALLY make this watch. We ANSWER, WE DO. Every screw, pinion, wheel, plate, &c., is made and finished from the metal in the rough at our Store, and we respectfully invite all to call and see the watches in the process of manufacture." Phipps 1860-1897 Frank G. Phipps Barnes,” white enamel SS dial with colorless but legible remains of a “Tracy Baker & Co, Waltham” signature, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#4198. Gross weight of assembled watch 100.3 dwt (156.0 g). The heavy early 20K gold case of this example is quite rare as the very high majority of this grade were cased originally in silver, and as American cases marked in excess of 18K content are quite rare. The dial of this example is also quite interesting with its faint trace of a Tracy Baker & Co. signature as this was the initial name of the Waltham operation following the auction of the Boston Watch Company. This Tracy Baker & Co. name was only used for a very brief period (May - June, 1857) before the firm was renamed Appleton Tracy & Co. and it is likely that this example’s dial signature was erased due to a desire following the name change to use up a remaining stock of Tracy Baker marked dials.
