DESCRIPTION: WW - Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph, Pre-Moon, ref 145.012-68, manual wind, 42mm x 48mm to lug tips, 20mm lug width, original stainless steel screw back case, "DON" (Dot Over Ninety) black tachymetre bezel, brown leather strap, original black step dial with applied Omega logo and lume painted indices, three inset subregisters for minute recording, hour recording and subsidiary seconds, 17J, cal 321, s#26552456, triple signed. The Omega Speedmaster was chosen by NASA in 1965 after outperforming numerous other contenders in rigorous testing. They were first issued during the Gemini program using the older straight lug style 105.002. More Speedmasters were purchased starting with the Apollo program astronauts being issued the "Professional" marked 105.012's in a beefier case with crown and pusher protectors as seen here. They remain flight qualified by NASA to this day and modern interpretations of this watch are still in production.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, chronograph runs and resets a little after zero, recommend an overhaul by a watchmaker, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, no oxide; excellent dial with discolored lume indices; fine hands with light paint loss and discolored lume; polished case shows light wear, still retains some of its original factory finishing, nearly mint DON bezel, several dings on caseback from misuse of a case wrench; Omega signed flat foot crown shows hardly any wear; good plastic crystal.

Includes the original inner sterling silver presentation box with silver price tag of $500 and the Lord Elgin logo as well as the original paper insert describing how to turn the box into a cigarette case and associated cedar inserts. Also included is a period newspaper clipping from October, 1951. In the many years our firm has handled watches we have never handled a 50 millionth Elgin wristwatch with its original silver box. These watches were made in 1951 in a single run of 1000 pieces to commemorate the achievement of 50 million watches produced, and additionally there was one dummy model produced as well. These watches were originally retailed for $500, a vast sum in 1951.
