Gross weight of assembled watch 115.2 dwt (179.2 g). An important and exceedingly rare watch, we are only aware of the existence of two examples of the Waltham split-seconds minute repeater. The single other example we have encountered was sold by Sothebys in 2004 and is serial number 3793206 (consecutive to the presently offered watch) which was formerly a part of the Rockford Time Museum collection and is noted in Donald Hoke's "The Time Museum Historical Catalogue of American Watches." as having a case that is "reconstructed" with "new covers, bow, crown, & stem." In contrast, the presently offered example, serial number 3793205, is notable for its superb condition throughout including its very heavy original gold hunting case made by prestigious New York casemaker Jeannot & Shiebler. In all an exquisitely beautiful watch that has been owned by our consignor since the mid-1970s and ranks among the most exceptional American watches in existence; we are honored to offer it here to the collecting community in its first marketplace appearance in over 40 years.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function and superb tone, during our rigorous testing we operated the repeat function numerous times and only a small handful of times we observed a striking of one minute apart from correct time, otherwise strikes were precise and complete, good chronograph and split function, good register function, virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb lustrous surfaces with few small micro-fine scratches, very small fine scratch near main plate’s edge above serial number; virtually flawless dial with only a few micro-fine glaze scratches of negligible effect on appearance; mint hands, timekeeping and sweep hands are plum colored, 60-minute register hand is blue; case shows hardly any wear, a mild very shallow dent toward left perimeter of rear visible as a slight ripple in reflected light at this position; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystals.

CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, few micro-fine scratches; virtually mint dial with few very small micro-fine scratches and few infinitesimal pinpoint edge nicks under bezel; nearly mint hands; case has unmatched serial numbers to its rear and its band with s#J300891 marked to rear and s#X0153 marked to band but very interestingly these differing component numbers correspond notably well with an example from another source we sold in October of 2019 which had the consecutive s#J300892 marked to rear and the close s#X0163 marked to its band, this appearance of another example with its component serial numbers unmatched in so similar a manner suggests that this nominal mismatch may in fact be correct and intentional to some examples of this case style, bezel of this example with no s# evident internally, case shows little wear, some typical fine scratches, an extremely subtle and mild shallow dent toward lower right of rear that is visible as slight rippling of reflection in this area; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal. Box exterior shows light wear, few fine scratches, foil Hamilton seal is present and has surface abrasion, inserts and upper lid liner are replacements of somewhat different appearance than the originals.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Chesapeake & Ohio, Railway Special" marked mvt, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, 3oz coin silver Dueber Railway OF original case, "W.L. Fredeking, Hinton, W. Va" marked white enamel DS dial, time-zone hands, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#30962. A rare and desirable railroad marking with its correct dial marked for Will Fredeking who was an official watch inspector for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. A further interesting aspect of this watch is its unusual serial number arrangement with the first two digits at one side of the case screw and the final three digits at the other; the reason for this unusual serial number marking is that this movement began its existence as serial number 962 prior to being renumbered by Hamilton with 30,000 added to its serial number for its November 27th, 1897 sale to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, Illinois. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.

Though this sunburst damascene pattern is the norm for 21 jewel and 23 jewel 18 size Ball Hamilton movements, this pattern is very rare among 17 jewel Ball Hamilton production which instead typically were finished with a bull's-eye pattern nickel damascene. We have only seen a very few other Ball Hamilton 17 jewel examples with this sunburst damascene and all have been within the 118351 to 118400 serial number range. Of these, this is the first example with Brotherhood marking we have encountered as the very few others we have seen have had "Official RR Standard" marking instead.

Beninghausen, Seattle, Wash" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, gilt mvt screws and regulator assembly, s#290404. A very rare watch that features one of Hamilton's most eye-catching and stylish movement signatures with its detailed Time Ball image. This movement is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as being one of four movements from this Grade 936 run that were sold to G. Beninghausen on September 30th, 1904. Gerhard Beninghausen established his jewelry business in Seattle in 1885, served as a time inspector for the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad, and operated Seattle's only streetside time ball. Beninghausen's Time Ball was located in front of his business in Seattle's Pioneer Square at 713-715 First Avenue and consisted of a post with a large metallic ball which dropped at a specific time each day, and residents and passerby made use of Beninghausen's Time Ball to set their watches to the correct time. Please see our photos of this lot for the image of an advertisement Beninghausen ran in the February 4th, 1902 issue of the "Seattle Star" newspaper and for the image of an advertisement ran in the January 1904 issue of "The Coast" magazine; with Beninghausen prominently promoting the Time Ball in each of these advertisements. Gross weight of assembled watch 58.9 dwt (91.6 g). A scarce to rare top grade watch, the total production of the Lord Elgin Grade 351 appears to be approximately 550 made. Though Elgin blocked 2000 serial numbers in total for the production of this grade it seems that only a fraction of these serial ranges were completed as all examples we have observed fall within either an initial group of 500 stem-set movements (serials 12718001-12718500) or a later group of 50 lever-set movements (serials 15159001-15159050).

A rare top grade 20 size Waltham, per the http://nawccinfo.nawcc.org website the total production of the American Watch Co. grade Model 1862 is believed to be 369 made. DESCRIPTION: APW - "American Calendar Watch Co, Pat. Feb. 13. 1866." marked dial, "W. Parker, New York" marked mvt, calendar watch, 15J, 18S, coin silver Am Watch Co HC recase, white enamel DS dial with aperture below 12 for calendar display via a rotating silvered disk under dial, KWKS, electrum gilt mvt, s#141. This early calendar watch is based on the design of Edward Oppenheimer that was granted U.S. patent number 52591. Though the plate layout of this movement bears overall similarity to Waltham's Model 1857 design; there are numerous notable differences between the present piece and Waltham's Model 1857 production including its substantially different gilt finish appearance which is of the Swiss style electrum color, differences to the exact shape and size of its barrel bridge and balance cock, the spacing between its case screw position and the adjacent plate screw position, the number and position of dial feet locations and the associated machining of its dial plate, the location of its hairspring stud, and the appearance of plate jeweling. For this reason we do not make any claim that the present watch has any degree of American-made material or finishing, and note that the reason we have listed this watch among the American portion of this sale is due to its signature and the historical interest of its U.S. patented calendar design. Based on the paucity of known examples, this "American Calendar Watch Co." watch appears to be quite rare and we are only aware of a small handful of others known, each of these having a serial number in relatively close proximity to the present example. For images and discussion of several other known examples we recommend the April 2009 NAWCC Bulletin article "Ten in Twenty Million?" by Joe "J.C." Cohen as well as another individual's 2015 NAWCC Message Board posting of photos of serial number 164 that include under-dial views.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance is gummy but will swing for a few brief arcs with a twist, calendar advancing when hands are set forward, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and some mild surface spots, mild ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past light wiping; dial is loose to mvt as one of its two dial feet is broken off and currently is remaining within mvt, dial with crudely patched chip at 2, scattered hls; fine hands; case is missing its push to release the front latch so front must be snapped open and closed, case shows ample wear, mild dent to lower left perimeter of rear, greatly reduced engraving detail; bow pivots freely, push is missing; good glass crystal.
