American Pocket Watches

Stock#: JH44336

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, American Watch Co, Model 1862 first run assembled from Nashua Watch Co material, 19J, 20S, silver HC recase of European manufacture, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, fully capped lever escapement, gilt mvt, s#50042 with Nashua s#163 located internally. A historically important watch that represents Waltham's first production derived from their acquisition of the Nashua Watch Company in 1862. These first run 20 size movements were comprised directly of Nashua Watch Co. produced components and these movements retain their Nashua Watch Co. assembly numbering internally and were engraved on their back plate with "American Watch Co" signature and serial numbers starting with 50,001. Disassembly of this example reveals typical Nashua Watch Co. construction and consistent Nashua Watch Co. numbering in multiple areas, and notes from our disassembly are included in the condition report below.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, very short scratch near center, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, some oxide and micro-fine scratch striations to steelwork of barrel arbor escutcheon and maltese cross, notes from disassembly are the Nashua serial number 163 is marked to the underside of the top plate, to the pillar plate, to the underside of the balance cock, the corresponding serial number 63 is marked to the underside of the pallet bridge, no serial number is evident to the underside of the balance wheel spar (arm) or to the hour or minute wheels, the pillar plate of this example has the distinctive Nashua Watch Co. features of an auxiliary plate for ease of train disassembly, and the pillar plate also has "1.87" and ".30" marking at its perimeter as is typical to Nashua production, movement's stopwork, maintaining power, and barrel lock are complete; dial with three small hls at bottom below seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows light wear, mild ding to front above center, engine turning and engraving detail with mild overall reduction and small portion of loss at rear shoulder; tight bow, push shows light wear; good glass crystal.

Gross weight of assembled watch 87.2 dwt (135.5 g); gross weight of case only with movement, crystal, crown and stem removed 41.6 dwt (64.8 g). From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some overall haze to gilt tone, some scattered spots, some fine to micro-fine scratches to barrel bridge, dial with some looseness to mvt and inspection of the movement uncased shows the dial screw near 7:30 is missing and the dial screw near 12:30 turns freely in place without reaching a tightened end point (dial was not removed to inspect its feet or reverse side); virtually flawless dial with small scratch at lower right perimeter of seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows very little wear, some dings and nicks to band, some mild dings to rear that are more evident to inner surface of lid, excellent engine turning detail with only slight reduction at shoulder; tight bow, crown shows very little wear but has some excess up/down play and stem tends to disengage when crown is at the upper portion of its range of motion, sleeve of watch with rust and some metal loss observed when movement was uncased and crown was unthreaded; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three-finger bridge mvt, 16S, heavy 18K gold J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) HC recase with gold cuvette and glazed observational mvt cover, white glass enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#942064. DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Appleton Tracy & Co, low serial #5810, Model 1857, 16J, 18S, 14K gold or better (tested, all components holding 14K test on stone, front and rear with very gradual fade of 18K solution on stone, band with rapid fade of 18K solution on stone, case possibly in the approximately 15K to 16K gold range overall) WP&Co (Wheeler, Parsons & Co) HC with inaccurate "Warranted 18K" marking, gold cuvette with "BWCF" marking to its inner surface, "Appleton Tracy & Co Waltham" marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gold balance wheel, gilt mvt, s#5810. Gross weight of assembled watch 79.1 dwt (123.1 g). A very early example from the initial year of the Appleton Tracy & Co.'s existence, this movement is from a production run listed in Waltham records as having been made in December of 1857. This movement has the notable early production features of a total jewel count of 16 (with center wheel arbor jeweled under the dial) and a blued steel disk around its barrel arbor. These features were characteristic of the earliest production of Appleton Tracy & Co. grade movements, but were short-lived as this grade's production was soon after changed to 15 jewel movements with gilt cups around their barrel arbors. It appears that casemaker Wheeler, Parsons & Co. may have been incorporated in 1867 which would date the case of this example to some years after its movement's production.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Bunn first run, serial #232, 15J, 18S, coin silver OF drum style Dueber recase with marking for retailer Bingham of Indianapolis, Indiana, acorn shaped pendant, offset gold hinges, "Springfield Watch Co." marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#232. An excellent very early example, the first run of Bunn production spanned serial numbers 201 to 300 and was finished between March and July of 1872 with this particular serial number having been finished in June. The case of this example is particularly attractive with its distinctive acorn shaped pendant which is found occasionally among cases made for retailer Wheelock Peet Bingham who operated in Indianapolis under the "Bingham" name until 1878 (following which Bingham operated in partnership as "Bingham, Walk & Mayhem" until early 1883, and for some years following this as "Bingham & Walk").

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Chesapeake & Ohio, Railway Special" marked mvt, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, 3oz coin silver Dueber Railway OF original case, "W.L. Fredeking, Hinton, W. Va" marked white enamel DS dial, time-zone hour hands, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#30962. A rare and desirable railroad marking with its correct dial marked for Will Fredeking who was an official watch inspector for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. An interesting aspect of this movement is its unusual serial number arrangement with the first two digits at one side of the case screw and the final three digits at the other; the reason for this unusual marking style is that this movement began its existence as serial number 962 prior to being renumbered by Hamilton with 30,000 added to its serial number for its November 27th, 1897 sale to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, Illinois and the renumbering of this particular serial number is noted in the Hamilton ledger records. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; excellent dial with some minuscule nicks to right side perimeter of center section, small fracture at edge largely under bezel at 8; excellent hands; case shows light wear, few shallow mild dents to rear causing ripples of reflection; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Burlington Standard Made by Hamilton Watch Co." marked mvt, "Burlington Standard" marked dial, Grade 943, 21J, 18S, gold-filled HC with spectacular engine turning and engraving detail including a detailed locomotive image to rear, white enamel DS dial, time-zone hour hands, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, gold jewel settings, gilt mvt screws and regulator assembly, ornate two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#43470. Watch comes with an attached leather strap with "Hamilton Railroad Standard 266" marked brass fob. A very rare railroad marking with a spectacular two-tone movement finish, this example is notable for the superb preservation of its movement's two-tone color. This serial number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been sold on February 20th, 1900 to a purchaser in McCook, Nebraska, but the name of the purchaser is not readily legible in the ledger. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, winds a bit stiffly and has some audible creak while setting, overhaul recommended for normalized winding/setting function, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb two-tone color, patch of abrasion to inner perimeter of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw, some fine scratches at left perimeter of barrel bridge, some dark spots to plate surface in space between third and fourth wheel jewel settings and case screw; dial with thin sliver of white fill material evident at seating of seconds-register indicating re-securing of dial segments and suggesting possibility that dial's outer chapter and/or seconds-register are replacements taken from another Hamilton dial as "donor," dial otherwise cosmetically superb with some mild edge rub under bezel; nearly mint hands; case shows virtually no wear, small nick to left center of front that is evident to inner surface of lid but with little (if any) exterior visibility, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal. Fob and strap appear to be likely of relatively modern era creation, both in excellent cosmetic condition.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 992B with rare gold case, 21J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original Hamilton Model 17 bar-over-crown case, "Hamilton Railway Special" marked Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#C288539. Watch comes with a scarce mottled raspberry colored hard plastic flip-top Hamilton box. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.9 dwt (114.9 g). This Model 17 case in 14K gold version is rare as Hamilton's pricing of this style limited its sales to a small handful of wealthy customers. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, nearly pristine surfaces with very few minimal micro-fine scratches; dial with two very small nicks to upper rim of seconds-register with one having associated very small surrounding hls, very small hl to inner rim of outer chapter near 2; excellent hands, hour and minute are black, seconds-hand is blue; case shows little wear, rear with some shallow ripples to its reflection over much of its surface possibly evidencing the polished removal of engraved initials, no dents or dings, we believe case serial numbers correctly match as case rear has s#P164739 and case band has two unambiguous handscratched Roman numerals of VII and III for the digits of 7 and 3 and has a third handscratched Roman digit of an "I" alongside an upside down "V" shape which we believe represents the 9, no serial number markings evident inside case bezel; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; clean plastic crystal. Box exterior shows light wear, small chips to front and rear of upper lid adjacent the hinge area, foil Hamilton seal is present with some abrasions, blue inserts are present and seemingly glued or otherwise secured within box, upper lid liner is present; watch slides quite tightly in and out of box likely due to its relatively thick plastic crystal.

Eaton of Pawtucket, Rhode Island on April 7th, 1894.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some soft white-ish toning of plate surfaces as is notably common among Grade 932 and Grade 933 production, plates with scattered fine and micro-fine scratches with most notable concentrations being to balance cock foot and around case screws, some abrasion to inner perimeter of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw; dial with group of outer chapter hls between 12 and 1, single outer chapter hls at 6 and at 7:30; excellent hands, minute with small bend near tip; case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail with mild reduction of fine detail at shoulders; tight bow, crown shows light wear; glass crystal with some circular rub marks internally.

This example notably has a damascene pattern which is substantially rare among 17 jewel Ball Hamilton production. While this sunburst damascene pattern is the norm for 21 jewel and 23 jewel 18 size Ball Hamilton movements, we have only seen a very small handful of Ball Hamilton 17 jewel examples with the sunburst damascene and all have been within a run of 50 serial numbers between 118351 and 118400. Of these, this is the first example with Brotherhood marking we have encountered as the couple others we've seen have had "Official RR Standard" marking instead.

An excellent early 20 size example that was handled previously by our gallery in 2012, this piece is from the first run of 20 size Appleton Tracy & Co. production which spanned serial numbers 50101 to 50200 and was made during 1862 and 1863. The only 20 size production to precede this run was runs of American Watch Co. grade movements at serial numbers 50001 to 50093 and 50095 to 50100, so overall the present watch is the 159th 20 size Waltham made by serial number.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Trade Mark A.K. Jobe RR Standard" marked dial, "A.K. Jobe, Jackson, Tenn. Water Valley, Miss." marked mvt, Grade 941, 21J, 18S, gold-filled original HC with beautiful engine turning and engraving detail, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene, s#127509. In our experience this hunting case Grade 941 version of this watch is particularly rare; we have only encountered a small number of either the Grade 940 or Grade 941 version but the greater number of these were open face Grade 940. Like the preceding lot, this watch shares the same distinctive dial of notably similar design and signature to the style typical of Ball Watch Co. "Official RR Standard" watches. Consistent with the small number of other A.K. Jobe marked Hamilton Grade 940/941 watches we've encountered, this example is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, with this particular serial number showing a sales date of August 1st, 1901. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, small patch of abrasion at inner edge of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with patched edge chip near 5, faint hl below seconds-register near 5, small patched edge chip under bezel at 2:30, flake tight along outer edge at under bezel at 7, tiny edge flake under bezel near 4:30; fine hands, minute is somewhat short and has some oxide, seconds-hand is a replacement; case front opens somewhat wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 105 degrees) and front closes leaving a bit of gap to band, case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Trade Mark A.K. Jobe RR Standard" marked dial, "A.K. Jobe, Jackson, Tenn. Water Valley, Miss." marked mvt, Grade 940, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF original case with very attractive engine turning and engraving detail to rear, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#138109. A rare and very interesting railroad grade private label, the viewer is struck immediately by the immense similarity of its dial design and signature to the style typical of Ball Watch Co. "Official RR Standard" watches. This similarity of dial styles raises the interesting question of whether this dial for A.K. Jobe was created with the knowledge and consent of Webb C. Ball, but we are not aware of any documentation that sheds light on this question. Consistent with the small number of other A.K. Jobe marked Hamilton Grade 940/941 watches we've encountered, this example is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, with this particular serial number showing a sales date of December 5th, 1900. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, tip of setting lever protrudes further than appropriate and is impeding the closing of case bezel, overhaul needed to address setting lever protrusion, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some short scratches and small pecks to balance cock foot and around case screw areas, some micro-fine scratches elsewhere, regulator assembly with some mild oxide in areas; excellent dial with faint hl below seconds-register near 5, some mild fine scratches and tiny surface nicks, mild circular hand rub in upper portion of seconds-register, small patched edge flake under bezel near 5, a line of perimeter scrape in areas under bezel; nearly mint hands; case bezel not threading closed due to excess protrusion of mvt setting lever, case bezel is currently only started onto its threads to avoid potential damage or further difficulties caused by tightening the bezel further, setting lever protrusion will need to be addressed for this case to be functionally retained with this mvt, case shows hardly any wear, tiny nick to band at 1, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

Beninghausen, Seattle, Wash." marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#473202. A very rare watch that features one of Hamilton's most eye-catching and stylish movement signatures with its detailed Time Ball image. Gerhard Beninghausen established his jewelry business in Seattle in 1885, served as a time inspector for the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad, and operated Seattle's only streetside time ball. Beninghausen's Time Ball was located in front of his business in Seattle's Pioneer Square at 713-715 First Avenue and consisted of a post with a large metallic ball which dropped at a specific time each day, and residents and passerby made use of Beninghausen's Time Ball to set their watches to the correct time. Please see our photos of this lot for the image of an advertisement Beninghausen ran in the February 4th, 1902 issue of the "Seattle Star" newspaper and for the image of an advertisement ran in the January 1904 issue of "The Coast" magazine; with Beninghausen prominently promoting the Time Ball in each of these advertisements. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.

An attractive piece with early American contract marking, though this watch is of English manufacture we have listed it here among American timepieces due to the interest of its signature. The case paper of this example is of particular historical significance to early American horology, as Jubal Howe was an apprentice of Luther Goddard that went on to head the watch repair department of Jones, Lows & Ball during which time a young Aaron L. Dennison was employed for repair service and worked under Howe's tutelage.

The bright spotted pattern was the first damascene used among 16 size Bunn Special production. This damascene is rare among 23 jewel 16 size Bunn Specials with a total of 510 produced in three different variants; the present example with "D'Bl Roller" movement marking represents the earliest of these three variants and has an estimated total production of 200 made. DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "Montgomery's Standard Numerical Dial. The Hamilton." marked dial, "Inspector's Standard" marked mvt, Grade 940, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF case with attractive engine turning and engraving detail, white enamel DS dial with marginal minute numerals, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene, s#432106. Comes with an attached leather strap with "Hamilton Standard" marked brass and red enameled fob. An attractive watch with combination of rare movement marking and very rare dial marking. The "Inspector's Standard" marked movements were made for the Smith Patterson Co. of Boston, Massachusetts in Grade 940, Grade 992, and Grade 993 versions. The dial of this example represents an early version of Henry S. Montgomery's marginal minute design, and notably this example (along with the very few identically marked others we've encountered) does not include a "6" hour numeral within its seconds-register so it differs in this respect from the marginal minute design that Montgomery ultimately established into mass production. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking but with very sluggish balance motion of low amplitude when in dial-up position, winds stiffly, overhaul recommended, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scratch to right side of barrel bridge, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, small spot of finish loss to upper portion of barrel bridge, regulator assembly with some areas of mild oxide; excellent dial with only a light outer chapter hl at 3:30; nearly mint hands; case shows very little wear, ding to rear of band at 7:30, excellent engine turning and engraving detail, inner surface of rear is largely through to brass and has a spotted finish that was likely imparted at a later point in the case's existence; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal. Fob and strap appear to be likely of relatively modern era creation, both in excellent cosmetic condition.

DESCRIPTION: APW - "American Calendar Watch Co, Pat. Feb. 13. 1866." marked dial, "W. Parker, New York" marked mvt, calendar watch, 15J, 18S, coin silver Am Watch Co HC recase, white enamel DS dial with aperture below 12 for calendar display via a rotating silvered disk under dial, KWKS, electrum gilt mvt, s#141. This early calendar watch is based on the design of Edward Oppenheimer that was granted U.S. patent number 52591. Though the plate layout of this movement bears overall similarity to Waltham's Model 1857 design; there are numerous notable differences between the present piece and Waltham's Model 1857 production including its substantially different gilt finish appearance which is of the Swiss style electrum color, differences to the exact shape and size of its barrel bridge and balance cock, the spacing between its case screw position and the adjacent plate screw position, the number and position of dial feet locations and the associated machining of its dial plate, the location of its hairspring stud, and the appearance of plate jeweling. For this reason we do not make any claim that the present watch has any degree of American-made material or finishing, and note that the reason we have listed this watch among the American portion of this sale is due to its signature and the historical interest of its U.S. patented calendar design. Based on the paucity of known examples, this "American Calendar Watch Co." watch appears to be quite rare and we are only aware of a small handful of others known, each of these having a serial number in relatively close proximity to the present example. For images and discussion of several other known examples we recommend the April 2009 NAWCC Bulletin article "Ten in Twenty Million?" by Joe "J.C." Cohen as well as another individual's 2015 NAWCC Message Board posting of photos of serial number 164 that include under-dial views.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance is gummy but will swing for a few brief arcs with a twist, calendar advancing when hands are set forward, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and some mild surface spots, mild ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past light wiping; dial is loose to mvt as one of its two dial feet is broken off and currently is remaining within mvt, dial with crudely patched chip at 2, scattered hls; fine hands; case is missing its push to release the front latch so front must be snapped open and closed, case shows ample wear, mild dent to lower left perimeter of rear, greatly reduced engraving detail; bow pivots freely, push is missing; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Columbus, Railway King, 23J, 18S, gold-filled OF swingout recase with attractive engine turning and engraving detail to rear, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, nickel damascene, s#503222. An attractive example of this rare watch, the total production of 23 jewel open face Columbus movements is believed to be 360 made per Greg Frauenhoff and John Dimar's excellent article in the June 2003 NAWCC Bulletin. Of this total, it appears the much larger majority were signed "Columbus King" rather than being signed "Columbus Railway King" as the present example, as of the twenty-five examples noted by serial number in the article there are twenty-three "Columbus King" as compared to only two "Columbus Railway King."
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, winds somewhat stiffly, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with few micro-fine scratches; dial with light outer chapter hl at 2:20, tiny surface nick to inner rim of outer chapter at 10:30, few minuscule pinpoint surface nicks elsewhere; excellent hour and seconds-hand, fine minute hand with ample finish loss and some oxide to tip; case shows very light wear, no dents or dings, engraving detail with mild reduction, spots of wear to brass to pendant; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good thick glass crystal.
