DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 933, low serial #1095, 16J, 18S, gold-filled HC recase, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#1095. A very early example, this movement has the historically notable feature of Hamilton's earliest regulator design which features its tensioning spring on the underside of the balance cock table. Per the superb research on early Hamilton products at the http://hamilton.rrstd.com/Hamilton/Early_Hamiltons.html website, it is believed that this earliest regulator style is found only among movements which Hamilton shipped out prior to January 1894. In review of the factory ledger, it appears that only 58 watches were likely sent out with this regulator design, and among this total 12 were sent back to the factory and resold at a later date and would have likely been fitted with the later regulator style prior to their re-shipment which would reduce the total number with this regulator style to only 46. This particular serial number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been finished on December 8th, 1893 and as having been sold on the following day of December 9th, 1893 to Louis Weber of Lancaster, PA. From the collection of Dr. Robert Restuccia.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, will tick briefly with a twist or will sluggishly tick continuously with a twist and some excess pressure held at crown, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, dark spot at perimeter of balance cock foot, few fine to micro-fine scratches and small dark spots scattered elsewhere; excellent dial with small edge chip under bezel at setting lever area, some scattered fine scratches; excellent hands; case shows very little wear though has wear to brass to its high areas suggesting a very thin original gold layer, slight ding near center of rear evident to inner surface of lid, excellent engine turning detail, wear to brass to central detail of front and rear, wear to brass to portions of engine turning detail and to raised ridges of front and rear perimeters, wear to brass to band and vast majority of pendant, scratches to upper perimeter of cuvette from slipped past openings; tight brassy bow, brassy crown shows light to medium wear; good glass crystal with glue excess at its seat.

Maiden Lane." marked mvt, 17J, 16S, gold-filled OF recase with fancy initials to rear, white enamel DS dial with applied photo emulsion, SW-SS, wavy line pattern nickel damascene, s#75770. Please see our photos of another image of Hayden W. Wheeler for comparison purposes which is found within Howard Lasser's excellent "The Story of Hayden W. Wheeler" article in the October, 2005 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin. The dial emulsion of this example featuring Hayden W. Wheeler himself is extremely rare, if not unique, and makes this a superb centerpiece for a Hamilton collector's set of Hayden W. Wheeler watches. The total production of this 17 jewel open face pendant-set Hayden W. Wheeler movement is believed to be 600 made. From the collection of Charlie Winters.
CONDITION: Mvt: Runs slightly sluggishly, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with few scattered micro-fine scratches, small marring around stem detent screw, minor oxide to winding wheels and regulator assembly; excellent dial though with a somewhat yellowed overall tone as the full dial surface was coated during the emulsion process and the emulsion material has aged to this tone, some scattered mild fine to micro-fine scratches, some bits of dark residue on the dial surface in areas around and outside the minute chapter, photo emulsion with superb detail and only a tiny spot of image loss to the lapel of Wheeler's coat, please note we emphatically recommend against any attempt to clean this dial as any soaking or rubbing of its surface would likely destroy the fragile photo emulsion; fine-plus hands; case shows very little wear, some gouging to band edge adjacent rear lip, few tiny nicks to band bottom, no dents, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 950B with rare 2B serial #, 23J, 16S, gold-filled OF original Hamilton Model 11 case, white enamel DS dial with Canadian market 13 to 24 hour indications, time-zone hour hands, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#2B798. The 2B serial number prefix is notably rare among Grade 950B production, with only 100 total made spanning serial numbers 2B701 to 2B800 which are listed in the Hamilton ledger with finish dates between August, 1943 and January, 1944. This 2B prefixed serial number sequence was originally intended by Hamilton for the production of a 23 jewel Grade 998B movement for the Ball Watch Co, and to this end 800 dial plates were produced with this serial number sequence. Ultimately though the concept for the 23 jewel Ball 998B was abandoned with no regular production examples made, so these 800 dial plates were then completed with serial numbers 2B001 to 2B700 as 21 jewel Ball Grade 999B and with serial numbers 2B701 to 2B800 as 23 jewel Hamilton Grade 950B. From the collection of Dr. Robert Restuccia.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, small fine to micro-fine scratches, mild oxide to steelwork; nearly flawless dial with few micro-fine scratches, some very mild bits of perimeter rub under bezel; nearly mint hands, minute and seconds-hand are black, time-zone hour hands are blue and red; case shows very little wear, some fine scratches to rear, few pinpoint nicks to band, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very light wear; good glass crystal.

An excellent example of this rare watch, the "Mermod & Jaccard's St. Louis Paragon Time-Keeper" has a unique appearance with elegant hourglass logo to its movement and dial. DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Washington Watch Co, Lafayette, 24J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase with attractive engine turning and engraving detail, rear shield with initials, white enamel DS Gothic dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, capped third wheel, jeweled barrel arbor, bright spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#1606480. An attractive example of this top grade private label featuring a rarer damascene variant that is seen among only a fraction of Lafayette movements. Based on a close study of Washington Watch Co. production, we believe that the total production of the 24 jewel open face Lafayette to be approximately 770 made, and of this figure it appears that only 100 were made with the fully bright spotted damascene as seen on this example. The 100 examples produced with this damascene constitute the first run of Washington Lafayette production spanning serial numbers 1606401 to 1608500, while all examples we have observed from later runs are damascened in a different style having only a portion of bright spotted pattern arranged as a strip through their movement's center.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly on a full wind, overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine to micro-fine scratches with the most notable being near the lower case screw; dial with scattered outer chapter hls, edge rub under bezel which includes wearing away of the tops of the "5" and the "20" minute numerals; fine hands, oxide to tip of minute; case bezel threads stiffly and has a tendency to cross thread, case rear is sometimes challenging to start onto its threads, case shows little wear, short but deep scratch at upper-right perimeter of rear, short but deep scratch to lower portion of bezel, excellent engine turning and engraving detail, wear to brass to reeding of band, curved scratches inside rear; bow pivots freely, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal with small finish bubble at right side.

DESCRIPTION: PW mvt only - Waltham, the first Model 1888 made, American Watch Co marked "Non-Magnetic," 19J with an unfortunate incorrect "21 Jewels" stamping to its train bridge acquired at some point later in its existence, 16S with pillar plate having been reduced from its original model specific diameter, OF model mvt, white enamel DS dial with impressed center, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, non-magnetic alloy balance wheel and hairspring, marked "Non-Magnetic" to dial plate below balance wheel, quilted pattern nickel damascene, s#3574001. A historically notable piece, the present movement is the first serial number made from Waltham's first run of Model 1888 production. This initial production run was very small, being of only 10 "American Watch Co." grade movements spanning serial number 3574001 to 3574010. From the handwritten Waltham ledger it appears that this initial batch of "American Watch Co." grade Model 1888 production was originally intended to be a larger run of 200 movements, but the note "Not Del'd" (not delivered) is listed alongside serial numbers 3574011 to 3574200 presumably indicating that this larger block of 190 serial numbers was not produced. Beyond the significance of its serial number the present movement has a few additional features worthy of note including its attractive quilted style damascene which is uncommon among American grade Model 1888 production, its non-magnetic alloy balance assembly and corresponding "Non-Magnetic" marking which is scarce to rare among American grade Model 1888 production, and its distinctive earlier style of open face Model 1888 plate design with only a narrow straight gap between train bridge and barrel bridge which is quite rare among American grade Model 1888 production.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound and will tick briefly with a twist, overhaul needed, mvt has an actual jewel count of 19 but has had a non-factory executed "21 Jewels" stamping marked to its train bridge, diameter of widest ridge of dial plate has been reduced presumably in an attempt to fit the movement to a standard 16 size case, plates with excellent color and luster, balance cock with some fine scratches and surface nicks, missing the "tail" portion of its regulator assembly, train bridge and barrel bridge with only few very mild micro-fine scratches, pallet bridge with fine scratch striations likely from sanding, winding wheels with some small spots of oxide; dial is of later vintage style and is of correct diameter for a Model 1899 or 1908 mvt, dial with scattered hls, some hand rub within seconds-register; fine hands, seconds-hand is smaller than appropriate for size of present dial's seconds-register.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 990 with very rare fishscale damascene, 21J, 16S, gold-filled OF swingout case with attractive engine turning and engraving detail to rear, "Tallmadge and Dalton" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, s#356411. This fishscale pattern damascene is very rare among Grade 990 production and was a special finish made for the Burr W. Freer Co. of 717 Market Street, San Francisco, California who were "Pacific Coast Agents" of Hamilton watches. This example is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to Burr W. Freer on August 26th, 1910, and this watch is from a group of 15 consecutive serial numbers (356401 to 356415) that are listed as having special finish and being sold to Freer during August and September of 1910. From the collection of Dr. Robert Restuccia.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with scattered fine scratches the most notable of which runs along the upper perimeter of the train bridge, center jewel setting is a brass replacement, regulator with ample oxide, regulator spring and winding wheels with some spots of oxide, plate screws and click with fine scratch striations likely from sanding to remove oxide; dial with faint hl below seconds-register, some scattered micro-fine scratches; fine hands with some scattered spots of finish loss; case shows very little wear, two mild small mars to lower portion of bezel seam likely caused by a past attempt to open with a tool, few scratches, few pinpoint nicks, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning and engraving detail, few tiny spots of wear to brass to pendant; tight bow, crown shows very light wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, prototype 23J pendant-set, "Elgin Natl Watch Co, U.S.A." marked mvt, 18S, nickel OF display case, white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, nickel mvt plates are "in the gray," s#375767. A very intriguing piece for the Elgin collector, this is an extremely rare, if not unique, prototype for a 23 jewel 18 size pendant-set model which was never pursued in Elgin's regular production. The six-digit serial number of this example is notable as Elgin reserved much of the 375,000 to 376,000 serial number range for their production of prototypes and samples, as based on observed examples. Watches we have encountered in this serial number range appear to have been made over a span of many years and are extremely diverse ranging from pieces that are visually identical to regular production movements to pieces that are dramatically different from anything made in the course of regular production. The closest relative among Elgin's regular production to the present example would be the Grade 214, but with the fundamental difference that the Grade 214 was made exclusively as a lever-set. The present example also differs greatly visually from the Grade 214 as it was completed "in the gray" with unadorned plates, with simple cylindrical raised gold jewel settings having squared edges and flat upper surfaces, and with plate screw heads having a turned circular finish.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some fine scratches and scattered small surface spots, steelwork with some oxide spots, winding wheels and click with fine scratch striations which we are uncertain of whether this is original finish or a sign of sanding at a later time, spacers inserted beneath case screws presumably for metal loss to these portions of case rim; dial with some scratches to center section left of center; fine hands with areas of oxide and finish loss; case shows little wear, some small fine scratches and nicks; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 992B, 21J, 16S, gold-filled OF original Hamilton Model 17 bar-over-crown case with circular finish to rear, "Hamilton Railway Special" marked melamine DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#4C148403. Comes with its correct blue colored box as was the norm in this vintage. This example is in extraordinary condition and appears to be unused new-old-stock, with its main deviance from as-new condition being a very small contact mark to its band which was likely acquired during handling at some point in its existence. The 4C serial numbered Grade 992B movements are uncommon and were produced in about 1970 after the termination of "regular" 992B production the preceding year. The reason for their different serial number prefix is that Hamilton made these watches by using their remaining stock of pillar plates that had been intended for future Grade 4992B production and were stamped with the 4C serial number sequence typical to 4992B production. These 4C serial numbered 992B watches (and a smaller number of similar 992B with "S" serial prefixes that were assembled from intended Grade 950B pillar plates) are often referred to as "clean up" production by Hamilton collectors and represent the last American output of railroad grade pocket watches.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance moves freely, overhaul needed as we suspect this example has likely not seen a servicing during its existence, virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, nearly pristine surfaces with few negligible micro-fine contact scratches that were likely acquired during original assembly; dial flawless apart from some thin edge rub under bezel; virtually mint hands with only some surface haze to all and some bits of green colored debris to seconds-hand; case shows no wear, few minimal micro-fine contact scratches to rear, very small nick to band at 5, no dents or dings, pristine circular finish to rear; tight bow, crown shows no wear; good glass crystal; box in excellent condition with some light exterior rub in areas.

DESCRIPTION: PW dial only - Waltham, 16S with 43.3mm diameter, ivory colored enamel DS dial, signed "A.W.Co. Waltham" with top line in Old English font, inset registers numbered to 60 at both at both 9 and at 3, three dial feet located at approximately 3.2, 23.5, and 42.8 minutes. An exceedingly unusual dial and the first of its kind we have encountered. The immediately notable features are its identical dual registers and its signature style which matches to what is found among a sizable portion of Waltham's top grade Model 1872 "American Watch Co." production. This dial begs the question of what movement it could have possibly been intended for, speculating freely we can envision perhaps some form of high grade prototype design with two seconds-registers, but at the present it remains a mystery with many questions and no clear answers! In any event, a very interesting piece for the Waltham collector.
CONDITION: Virtually flawless dial with only negligible pinpoint surface spots right of 8 and right of 1 which both appear to be as-made finish imperfections.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Howard Keystone, Series 0 with gilt plate finish, 23J, 16S, gold-filled OF case, white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, gilt mvt, s#1086070 to visible portion of mvt. An eye catching piece with unique movement appearance, disassembly of this movement reveals mismatched serial numbers throughout (as described in further detail below in the condition report) and that the plates were originally of nickel finish prior to their gold-plating. This indicates that the watch was presumably not a factory directed item or project but rather was something assembled and finished outside of the course of factory production, possibly being either a piece made for personal use by a factory employee using in-house material on hand or possibly being made at some later time by a watchmaker unassociated with the factory using gathered Howard Keystone materials. The gilt finish is well executed and attractive, making this an interesting addition for the Howard collector looking for something unique to show off.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, slight rub to inner perimeter of center bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw, few small micro-fine scratches, disassembly reveals a myriad of mismatched internal serial numbers (1077138 to balance cock, 1103400 to balance wheel spars, 1078544 to fourth/escape wheel bridge, 76238 to center bridge, and 01385 to palley bridge), center bridge is of a slightly lower profile than other plates suggesting it was possibly milled to remove factory markings prior to its gold-plating; dial with edge chip and associated small fracture under bezel at 9, hl below seconds-register at 6; excellent hands; case shows light wear, some scratches and fine scratches including a few adjacent the rear seam likely caused by a past attempt to open with a blade, scattered dings and nicks to band, thin sliver of wear to brass following lower rear/band seam; tight bow, replacement crown shows no wear; plastic crystal with some fine scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 936, scarce early renumbered mvt, 17J, 18S, sterling silver OF recase with nickel cuvette, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#30876. This movement was originally finished as serial #876, but was renumbered by Hamilton to serial #30876 prior to its sale. This renumbering, with the addition of 30,000 to the original number, is found among Grade 936 and Grade 937 movements that initially had serial numbers below 2000 but that were remaining in Hamilton's unsold inventory by about Fall of 1897. It is believed that this renumbering was intended to "freshen" the appearance of this older inventory by updating it to serial numbering that was closer to Hamilton's then-current production sequence, and in total it is believed that less than 300 watches were renumbered in this manner. This particular example is listed in the Hamilton ledger with renumbering to 30876 and with a sale on November 12th, 1897 to H.A. Grothe of Lanesboro, Minnesota.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, mild oxide to regulator assembly, missing a case screw; dial with scattered hls, some edge flakes with majority being between 1 and 2:30 and largely under bezel; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, sharp ding to lower-right perimeter of rear, dings to band near 9, some scattered lesser dings elsewhere, reduced engraving detail, bezel and rear leaving small bit of gap to band when closed, cuvette with scratches from slipped past openings; white metal replacement bow pivots freely, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal is currently loose and has edge chips and appears to have been held previously by a copious amount of glue, should be discarded for a properly sized replacement.

DESCRIPTION: PW dial only - Ball Hampden, 18S, white enamel SS dial, Moorhouse-style decorative features, dial feet positions are for open face model mvt. A very attractive dial, this style is correct for "Ball's Standard Superior Grade" marked mvt. This dial has elegant decorative accents and flourishes in the style of Josiah Moorhouse, but like the other examples of this Ball Hampden dial we have observed, it does not carry any type of signature or marking on its rear so we choose to call it "Moorhouse-style" rather than to speculate as to whether it was truly executed by Moorhouse. From the collection of Dr. Robert Restuccia.
CONDITION: Dial with light perimeter hl between 11:30 and 12, two very light hls within seconds-register, some very small edge flakes, some areas of loss to areas of the markings of the outermost fine lines outside the minute numerals, and dial is missing half of its upper foot at the 59 minute position.
