American Pocket Watches

Stock#: JH57162

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Crystal Plate, serial #12, Model 1872 with free-sprung balance, 16-17J, 16S, 18K gold (tested) OF original display case with threaded bezels, s#1773 marked to case band and both bezels, white enamel DS dial with Arabic numerals in radial orientation and with distinctive Old English "A.W.Co." signature, SW-LS, free-sprung balance, back plate and balance cock constructed of polished transparent rock crystal, gold pallet bridge, gilt damascene dial plate, gilt pillar screws, frosted and damascened winding wheels, s#12. Gross weight of assembled watch 68.4 dwt (106.4 g). One of the most beautiful and iconic watches in American horology, the Waltham Crystal Plate movements have red ruby jewels friction set directly into the upper plate giving the illusion of their floating in mid-air. This particular example is especially notable as it is believed to be the only known 16 size open face Crystal Plate that is equipped with a free-sprung balance; and this watch is also a strikingly beautiful example with its superb condition throughout, its unusual and elegant top grade dial, and its gold skeleton style case with an ideal simplicity of design that serves to present the piece without distraction. This example became known to the collecting community in the late 1990s when it was discovered among a jeweler's inventory in Lisbon, Portugal, and soon after this watch was featured on the cover of the October, 1999 NAWCC Bulletin. In total it is believed that only approximately 20 to 25 examples of the 16 size Crystal Plate were produced, and for more excellent information on this watch type we recommend the April 2003 NAWCC Bulletin article titled "Waltham's Crystal Plates" that was written by Gerrit A. Nijssen and Carl B. Goetz.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, upper crystal plate with a small flake and tiny adjacent scratch at perimeter edge outside the crown wheel, crystal balance cock with a tiny pinpoint flake at one edge of its hairspring stud protrusion, upper crystal plate and crystal balance cock otherwise flawless, gilt dial plate with superb color and luster, winding wheels with some tiny specks of mild oxide; flawless dial; virtually mint hands; case shows hardly any wear, nick to band near 2, no dents; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystals.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Charles Fasoldt, Albany, NY, serial #66, co-axial double wheel escapement lever chronometer, 15-16J, 18S, silver original E.H. (E. Humbert) HC, silver cuvette engraved "C. Fasoldt's Patent Isochronal Chronometer. Albany, N.Y.," "Charles Fasoldt Albany N.Y." marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS with offset winding arbor, co-axial chronometer lever escapement with double-escape wheel, duo-in-uno hairspring, gilt damascene upper plates with pebbled gilt dial plate, gold regulator, mvt marked "C. Fasoldt's Patent Feb. 1. 1859 and Patent applied for," s#66. This watch represents an early stage of Fasoldt's work following his move from Rome, New York to Albany, New York. Per Mike Harrold's excellent "Charles Fasoldt, Horologist and Inventor" book it is believed that Fasoldt produced somewhat less than 450 watches in total and that the transition from Rome to Albany production occurred at roughly serial number 55. This excellent original example is quite attractive, and the contrast of its movement's differing finishes to upper plate versus dial plate gives it a very pleasing overall visual effect. This movement is also notable for its presence of a duo-in-uno hairspring which combines within a single piece of steel the geometry of both a helical spring and a flat spiral spring. Charles Fasoldt utilized the duo-in-uno hairspring style among a small portion of his earlier output and to our knowledge was the only American maker to have utilized this hairspring design. From the Wing family collection.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start and ticking with some visible error in the flat of its balance motion, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, some scattered micro-fine scratches and mild surface spots; dial with some scattered light hls, small bit of fill material evident at seating of seconds-register indicating it has been re-secured; excellent though mismatched hands, hour and minute of different styles, hour is blue, minute and seconds-hand are plum colored; case shows medium wear, an attractive dark patina with some areas having darker tone, ding to lower rear perimeter, mild dings at center rear and above center rear, small nick at left perimeter of front, reduced engraving detail, case front opens a bit wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 105 degrees), initials scribed to inner surface of front lid; tight bow, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - L. Goddard, serial #194, verge fusee, 55mm, unmarked silver OF pair cases, inner surface of outer case with a "Goddard" name scribed to its surface but first name is not definitively legible (though visible portions of first name appear consistent with "Parley," who was Luther's son), outer also containing a paper for watchmaker Thomas Lyon of Northboro, Massachusetts, white enamel dial, gold hands, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt, balance cock with beautiful delicate piercing and engraving, s#194. An excellent example from this historically important early American maker, Luther Goddard was the first American to achieve a sizable scale of watchmaking output. Based on known examples it appears he and his sons successfully produced a bit more than 500 watches in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in the years prior to 1817. This example features the earlier style "L. Goddard" signature, as opposed to the "L. Goddard & Son" signature seen with the following lot, and from known examples it appears this signature change took place somewhere within the 200s serial range. From the Wing family collection.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly and stopping occasionally, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some scratches around pillar positions, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, one pillar lacking a pin and will no longer accept a pin as its post has metal loss to one side, some very small bits of oxide to balance wheel; excellent dial with some scattered fine scratches, the two most notable being between 3 and 4 and at 6; excellent hands; outer case shows little wear, an attractive dark patina, ding to lower edge of rear, button latch good; inner case shows little wear, mild dent at bottom edge, two dings to right edge; bow pivots semi-freely; domed glass crystal with perimeter scratch at upper-right.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, American Watch Co with non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, Model 1872, 21J, 16S, heavy 18K gold original A.W.Co. HC, gold cuvette, fancy white enamel SS impressed dial with yellow and blue markings, extensive gold foil decoration, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, quilted pattern nickel damascene, s#2747889. Gross weight of assembled watch 87.0 dwt (135.2 g). A beautifully finished top grade movement; Waltham's Model 1872 "American Watch Co." grade is considered by many collectors to represent the peak of movement finish quality and aesthetics among American industrial watchmaking. This particular example is notable for having a non-magnetic alloy balance wheel and hairspring which is a feature that is only found among a very small fraction of this grade's production.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, very few micro-fine scratches, tiny nick to plate surface above mid-point of s#, few very small bits of oxide to winding wheels, underside of balance wheel has been inspected and confirmed to have correctly matching s# to mvt; nearly flawless dial with short scratch at upper perimeter above 12, few minuscule pinpoint edge nicks under bezel, pinpoint dark spot above upper-right of seconds-register which is an as-made finish imperfection; excellent hands; case shows little wear, very slight shallow ding right of front center evident as a slight ripple to reflected light, good engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows ample wear with ridge break; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Benjamin Franklin, 25J, 16S, gold-filled OF recase, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, capped third wheel, jeweled barrel, two-tone checkerboard pattern gilt and nickel damascene with bright spotted surround, gilt mvt screws and regulator assembly, s#2135600. An attractive example of this extremely rare top grade private label. Although Illinois references (Meggers' book and Russ Snyder's database) suggest a production of over 100 made for the 25 jewel open face Benjamin Franklin, we believe the actual production was in fact only 55 made. Examples we have encountered have been found in five very small production runs as follows - serial numbers 2135586 to 2135600, 2242131 to 2242140, 2287901 to 2287905, 2406951 to 2406965, and 2406971 to 2406980 (the Illinois database by Dr. Russ Snyder notes an additional larger serial range of ninety watches at 2287911 to 2288000, but we believe this group to be in error as the multiple watches we have seen in this range of 90 numbers have all been 23 jewel with factory "Sangamo" marking).
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color, small spot to barrel bridge near winding arbor, some scattered very small mild spots elsewhere, winding wheel and regulator assembly with oxide, regulator spring and some screw heads with ample gilt loss; dial with faint outer chapter hls near 1 and 7, fine scratch to lower perimeter of seconds-register, fine scratch near mid-point of signature, edge chipping under bezel between 12:30 and 3:30; fine hands, minute with oxide to tip and hub; case shows little wear, slight shallow dent to upper portion of rear shield, good engine turning detail, spots of wear to brass to pendant; tight bow, crown shows little wear; glass crystal with some scattered small scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - M.S. Smith & Co, Detroit, mvt signed "Made by C.L. Hoyt Expressly for M.S. Smith Detroit, Mich." and is likely the personal watch of firm's founder Martin S. Smith, 19J, 18S, HC model mvt cased in sidewinder orientation in nickel OF display recase with "Dueber Hampden" marked front bezel, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#76. A very rare maker, in total we believe that M.S. Smith & Co. produced in the range of approximately 60 to 70 watches. These watches were the creation of Charles L. Hoyt who was to later bring this same movement design to the ill-fated Freeport Watch Co. of Freeport, Illinois. We believe this particular example to be unique and to have been specially made by Hoyt to be the personal watch of Martin S. Smith himself. The reasons for this belief are the unique presentation signature "Made by C.L. Hoyt Expressly for M.S. Smith Detroit, Mich," the fact that this signature is addressed to the individual as "M.S. Smith" rather than in terms of the business as "M.S. Smith & Co." as is typical of all other examples we have seen, and as this watch features a fully capped lever escapement for a total jewel count of 19 rather than the 15 jewel count of all other examples made by this firm that we have encountered. Beyond this, we suspect that "No. 76" may have been chosen intentionally as the number for Smith's personal watch due to the significance of this number's association to the American centennial date of 1876.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fair cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with reflective sheen evident of polishing which has reduced definition of damascene detail, scattered small to tiny surface nicks and micro-fine scratches; dial with scattered fractures and hls which include some associated very small surface nicks or flakes, small edge chip at 6; fine hands of mismatched color, hour and minute are plum colored, seconds-hand is blue; case shows little wear, group of scratches to band between 9 and 10, good engraving detail to Dueber Hampden marking; tight bow, crown shows little wear; plastic front crystal with some fine scratches, good glass rear crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Dudley Watch Co, Masonic, Model 3, 19J, 12S, white gold-filled OF original display case with Art Deco style bow, refinished metal dial, SW-SS, lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, gold jewel settings, nickel pillar plate with engraved gilt bridges in the form of Mason's tools, silvered Holy Bible on winding bridge, s#5307. This example comes as pictured with an attractive sterling silver chain and also with a magnificent silver and gilt ball-form Masonic fob which has four exterior latches which release to allow it to unfold into a cross comprised of six equal sized pyramids with Masonic symbols on each of their sides; this fob style being exceedingly unusual and a truly perfect accessory to this watch! Interestingly our consignor has informed us that this superb pairing of watch, chain and fob has been together for most, if not all, of this watch's working lifetime as our consignor purchased the piece approximately 20 years ago from an individual that had owned it since the mid-20th century (likely 1940s, by his best estimate) and that the combination of watch, chain and fob were already together at the time of his own acquisition.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly on a full wind, crown needing some downward pressure as turned to prevent it from lifting into setting position, overhaul recommended, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some toning of plate surfaces, barrel bridge with a mismatched screw; refinished dial with surface spotting; fair hands with substantial oxide and finish loss; case shows hardly any wear, some small scratches to band near front and rear bezel opening positions, no dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystals. Chain shows little wear, an attractive darkened patina. Fob is excellent with good folding and unfolding function, good gilt exterior finish, and inner surfaces with superb engraving detail and some attractive dark patina.

DESCRIPTION: APW - "F.H. Clark & Co, Memphis, Tenn." marked to mvt, dial and case, lever fusee of English manufacture with American Civil War era military inscription, 51mm, 18K gold original HC with fixed gold cuvette engraved "Lieut. E.S. Johnson From His old clerks Feb.y 22.d 1864," white enamel SS dial, lever escapement, diamond endstone, jeweled fusee arbor, marked as "19J" though possibly a false marking as evident actual jeweling suggests likely an actual count of 16J, gilt mvt with gilt locking dust-cap, s#16900 with matching serial number to dial and within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 81.0 dwt (126.0 g). Although of English manufacture, we have chosen to present this watch among the American portion of our catalog due to the significance of its Civil War era military inscription and American retailer's signature. A search of Civil War records available through www.ancestry.com reveals a number of individuals as possibilities of matching the E.S. Johnson name, but with a cursory investigation have not been able to pinpoint one as definitive.

This fact was proudly advertised by Elgin at the time, and the 1874 edition of the "Elgin Almanac" includes the statement that "over five hundred of the best Elgin Watches have been furnished from time to time to the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. for the use of their engineers, many of them to take the place of the English and other watches formerly used, but now discarded by the Company for the Elgins, which are pronounced by the officers of that road to be superior to any watch ever used by them."

DESCRIPTION: APW - Rockford, Grade 61, extremely rare 22J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, gilt mvt screws, s#439865. An extremely rare watch, Rockford's total production of 22 jewel movements was very small, and this is in fact the first open face example we recall having encountered. This piece can be seen to have been initially finished as a 17 jewel movement before being upgraded to its 22 jewel count, but we believe this upgrade was Rockford factory executed as the jeweling and finish appearance is very much consistent with the handful of other 22 jewel Rockford watches we have encountered, namely a very small quantity of hunting case model movements that were private label signed for Chicago jeweler Joseph P. Wathier and for Minneapolis jeweler S.B. Abeles. This factory marked open face example is very similar in terms of finish quality and two-tone damascene style, but its initial origin as a more humble 17 jewel movement is evident as its barrel bridge marking of "22" is alongside what was clearly originally a "17" marking that was later obfuscated with the addition of some decorative flourishes, and as the "Jewels" marking can be seen to have initially been simply a "J" with the "ewels" portion added at a later point.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent two-tone color, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, oxide to regulator assembly, some mismatched non-gilt screws; dial with scattered light hls, small edge chip at 2, small flake at upper rim of seconds-register, very small fine scratch left of center; fine hands, hour with mild oxide to spade, seconds-hand is a smaller sized replacement; case shows ample wear, scattered dings and nicks, reduced engine turning detail with full loss of rear shoulder and visible remainder being quite light, spots of wear to brass to pendant, wear to brass to reeding of band as well as to ridges of bezel and rear perimeter; tight brassy bow, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal with many scattered scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - South Bend, Grade 429 with rare digital time display, 19J, 12S, chrome-plated base metal OF original case marked "Made Expressly For South Bend" and "Emperor Quality," front with apertures for hours, minutes and seconds, painted metal rotating dial disks for hours, minutes and seconds, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#1216288. A very rare watch, with a search of our firm's sales history this appears likely to be the first example of a South Bend "digital" that we have handled among the countless thousands of watches that have passed through our doors in the past 37 years. Our understanding is that these watches were made at some point in the years following the closing of the South Bend factory and were an aftermarket product by a firm using remaining stock of 12 size South Bend movements. This example is currently in need of overhaul for running order, and we suspect its seconds-register disk is a replacement, but it remains an excellent piece for the South Bend collector that wants to have (almost) everything!
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance not moving freely, hour and minute registers with good digital function when advanced via setting mechanism, overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine scratches to balance cock adjacent regulator adjustment nut, some surface dirtiness visible in areas; hour and minute disks excellent in visible portions, when case front is removed paint loss to much of central portion of hour disk is evident, seconds-register disk is presumably a replacement as its numeral markings fall outside the visible portion of case aperture and as its more central hash marks have been crudely applied; case shows hardly any wear, micro-fine scratches to front and rear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; bow pivots freely, crown shows hardly any wear; plastic bezel aperture crystals with some fine scratches.
