EPW - Vacheron & Constantin, Genève, enormous deck watch with very rare helical hairspring, 82mm, massive coin silver OF original case with signed cuvette bearing attributes engraved as "Chronomètre Balancier Integral Spiral cylindrique," white enamel SS dial, SW-pin-set, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 17J, Guillaume balance with helical hairspring, gilt mvt signed "55 Heures" (French for "55 Hours"), s#361068. Gross weight of assembled watch 243.4 dwt (378.6 g). One of the most unusual Vacheron & Constantin pieces we have had the pleasure of handling, this watch is notable for both its strikingly massive size which is significantly larger than typical deck watches and for its use of a helical hairspring which is quite rare among Vacheron & Constantin production.

Mvt: Running with small error in the round of its balance motion, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, regulator spring is a replacement, three small fine scratches above "55 Heures" marking, some additional mild fine and micro-fine scratches elsewhere, fine scratch striations to steel disk surrounding balance jewel and to steel piece securing hairspring stud, micro-fine scratch striations to escape wheel jewel setting, few small specks of oxide to winding wheels; excellent dial with very faint hl within seconds-register, body of dial with few mild micro-fine scratches and minuscule surface nicks; fair hands, hour and minute are re-colored, seconds-hand missing its tail; case with soldered repair to rear planchet which is readily apparent to internal surface of lid but is more well executed externally with some color difference at areas of repair, case shows little wear, cuvette with some fine scratches, mild dent to upper-right perimeter of rear, mild ding to lower-left shoulder of rear, few small nicks, case front and rear opening short of 90 degrees (to approximately 85 degrees and 70 degrees, respectively); bow pivots semi-freely though its central range of motion, crown shows little wear; glass crystal with internal edge flake at 9.

WW - Benrus Type II Class A, Mil-W-50717, circa Aug 1976, US issued dive watch, automatic, 42mm x 47mm to lug tips, 19.5mm wire lug width, original stainless steel unibody case with bi-directional luminous Bakelite dive bezel, black nylon one piece strap, original black dial with white painted Arabic numerals and luminous painted indices, 17J, s#1642, triple signed. A classic among military watch collectors, this is a design that has aged well and has a great size and fun history. Don't let this excellent example swim away.

APW - Hamilton, Grade 3992B, World War II era Navigation Master Watch made for Canadian military use, 22J, 16S, .800 silver OF original case with contract markings to rear, deeply stamped additional markings of C.H.S. 3 (Canadian Hydrographic Services class 3 designation), Canadian Ministry of Defence (English spelling) pheon and s# to rear, white enamel dial with Canadian market 13 to 24 hour indications, dial also with applied paper label marked with s#, SW-hack-set with sweep-seconds, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, mvt marked "U.S. Gov't," striped pattern nickel damascene, mvt s#3C2472 with matching serial number stamped to case rear as well as marked to applied paper dial label. Watch comes with a fitted wooden box with Hamilton signature plaque to its front. An excellent original example of this Canadian Navy version of the 3992B which is quite a bit scarcer than the equivalent supplied to the British Navy.

APW - Waltham, 22J, unusual center-seconds military watch, 16S, chrome-plated base metal OF display case appears to have been comprised with a rear bezel taken from another case, white enamel dial with 13 to 24 hour indications, SW-SS, lever escapement with visible cap jeweling of lever, satin nickel finish, s#30705684. A rare and visually unique Waltham product, the center-seconds of this movement is driven by its enormous center gear above the rear plates which is propelled by a small gear above the escape wheel. This is only approximately the fourth example of this watch that this cataloger has encountered.

This particular watch was owned by a Theodore Melford Thompson who was drafted at the ripe young age of 22 for service in the Great War. It was unclear in our research whether he actually saw combat.

Golay & Son, London, World War II era British military aircraft watch with center-seconds, 62mm, chrome-plated base metal OF original case with rotating black painted bezel with inner markings on a scale of 0 to 360, band with threaded screw at 1 that operates as a clamp to allow or prevent rotation of bezel, case rear with British military broad arrow (pheon) marking in addition to HS.4 designation, case as-made with no bow or provision for such, white enamel dial with broad arrow marking between "A W" letters, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, likely 18J, Swiss made gilt mvt, s#268 within case and to dial. The H.S.4 designation is for a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm dash-mounted timepiece, and during the early portion of World War II these H. Golay watches were used among Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers.

The "Bu. Aero U.S. Navy" marking is scarce among Grade 4992B production and is only found among the very early end of production. We believe the total production of Grade 4992B with this marking is likely somewhere between 1000 and 1500 made.

Waltham's AN 5740 "Master Navigation Watch" had a total production of only 5,000 made making it significantly less common than its similar 22 jewel military counterparts from Hamilton (greater than 140,000 made) and Elgin (20,000 made). An excellent example of this uncommon military watch which is quite challenging to find in upper level cosmetic condition such as this.
