DESCRIPTION: EPW - Vacheron & Constantin, Genève, rare aluminum watch, 44mm, aluminum OF original Vacheron & Constantin case with "Presented to H.F. Jewell by Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd. in Recognition of 25 Years of Loyal Service 1949" engraved to rear, aluminum dial with applied numerals, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 17J, aluminum mvt plates with fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#456287. Gross weight of assembled watch 12.8 dwt (19.9 g). A notably rare watch, this Vacheron & Constantin aluminum pocket watch was commissioned by Henry Birks of Montreal on behalf of the Aluminum Company of Canada as presentation pieces for their employees. The initial delivery of these watches occurred in 1938, and by April of 1950 a total of 271 examples were delivered. Based on observed examples, it appears a small but unknown number of additional examples were produced until at least 1955. These watches are a delight to hold in one's hand, as their remarkably light weight immediately grabs one's attention as these watches are well less than one-half the weight of most equal sized gold cased Vacheron & Constantin dress watches.

Box, certificate, and sales receipt are all marked with s#36390 correctly matching to the present watch. Gross weight of assembled watch 55.8 dwt (86.8 g). A beautiful and complete original example with sales receipt showing its impressive $185 original purchase price. At 44mm diameter this piece straddles the line for its era of potentially either being a relatively small gentleman's watch or of being a relatively large lady's pendant watch. We find the bow-setting mechanism in the style of Jules Jurgensen of this example to be very intriguing as this is a feature seldom encountered on a product without the Jurgensen family name.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, haze to portions of plate surfaces; dial with its seconds-register evidently re-glued being slightly out of index and having a small bit of glue excess at its upper edge, dial otherwise flawless; excellent hands, some small bits of finish loss to minute, hour and minute are plum colored, seconds-hand is blue; case front needing to be manually opened as lift spring is not opening lid under its own power, case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; good glass crystal; box in excellent cosmetic condition overall, exterior showing little wear, some mild scratches and nicks, interior mostly excellent though with tearing and fraying of the silk ribbons of the upper lid liner, one wooden slat from inside inner surface of upper lid is currently loose but is present and hopefully awaits its next owner to glue it back in position.

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Von Loehr patent Perpetual (self-winding) with winding indicator, Swiss, 52mm, .935 silver original Max Gutkaes, Glashütte HC, "Perpetuale Patent" signed brass cuvette, unusual shaped bow that functions as a hook for hanging, white enamel SS dial with subsidiary-seconds and rotating winding indicator register, continuous winding with weighted bob as well as option for manual winding by key (a key is included with lot as pictured), set by turning button over mvt center, lever escapement, at least 15J, gilt mvt, s#2358 within case. Comes with a short silver chain and with a key as pictured. Von Loehr's patents were granted in Britain and the United States by 1879. Von Loehr's watch notably requires significant physical activity to remain wound, and Von Loehr noted that this was the precise advantage of the timepiece, as it would remind the wearer of the "evil of his ways by the failure of his timepiece to perform its duty by running down" and so it was a "monitor" of inactivity to promote the wearer's "general health." Von Loehr was actually ahead of his time with his fitness promoting ways, so for the watch collector looking for a little motivation to exercise, it's time to buy a Von Loehr and start jogging!
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered scratches and fine scratches to plates, winding arbor escutcheon with multiple screw witness marks around its perimeter from having been rotated to various orientations and tightened with its three securing screws over its lifetime, some oxide to steelwork of self-winding mechanism; nearly flawless dial with few scattered mild micro-fine scratches, some infinitesimal nicks to rim of aperture for winding indicator register; excellent hands, finish loss to tip of hour, timekeeping hands are blue, winding indicator hand is gilt; case shows very light wear, an attractive dark patina to exterior, tarnished cuvette with some surface spots, engine turning detail reduced at shoulders, front lift spring is weak serving only to start lid open and allowing lid to fall to nearly closed with gravity, case rear opens short of 90 degrees (to approximately 80 degrees); bow pivots freely, push shows light wear; glass crystals with short perimeter fractures at 7 and 8:30, some fine scratches.
