DESCRIPTION:
PW dial only - "Duff & Sollace, Manufacturers of Watch and Clock Dials, Thomaston, Conn." marked white enamel 18S dial with additional markings of "Special Designs Duplicated" and "Watch Dials. Dial Dies Monograms. Lettering etc.," image of a man's head at 6 with some yellow coloration to his necklace and to portion of his headdress, Masonic symbol at 7, "D" and "S" at 9 and 3 presumably for Duff & Sollace. Dial comes with a set of hour and minute hands as pictured. A very unusual and eye-catching promotional dial meant to display the talents of Duff & Sollace, a short-lived firm that was organized in November, 1895 but met an early demise in October, 1897 when their factory building was destroyed by a fire. Notably, Duff & Sollace was a supplier of dials to the nearby Seth Thomas watch factory during this time, making the present piece a nice compliment to a Seth Thomas collection.
CONDITION:
Dial with fracture between lower edge and upper-right perimeter having some additional parallel hls branching off along portions, hl from left side passing through center and terminating at aforementioned fracture, edge chip or flake at top, some additional scattered lesser edge flakes elsewhere; excellent hands, oxide to hub of minute.
