DESCRIPTION: EPW - Unsigned English, keyless going barrel one-minute tourbillon with lever escapement, mvt by Nicole, Nielsen and Co, type "Nielsen I" tourbillon under Reinhard Meis' system, 57mm, heavy 18K gold OF original case bearing London hallmarks for 1901, "F.T" marking in oval cameo for casemaker Frederick Thoms of Clerkenwell, glazed observation mvt cover, swivel pendant, white enamel SS dial, elegant blued poker hands with matching seconds-hand, SW-pin-set, fully capped lever escapement with sugar-tong counterpoise on rotating carriage, gilt mvt, s#4250. Gross weight of assembled watch 100.7 dwt (156.5 g). A beautiful example of this rare watch with a substantial in-hand presence. Reinhard Meis placed production of genuine English tourbillions (French: tourbillon) at only 100 or so in his brilliant book, "Das Tourbillon," noting that those lever tourbillons made by Nicole Nielsen and Co carried the pointed tooth escape wheel, while those made by Sidney Better carried the Swiss club-tooth escape wheel.

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Breguet, Paris, quarter-hour repeater with concealed plunge activation (pull pendant cap out and rotate 90 degrees to activate repeat plunge), 51mm, 18K gold OF original case with "P . B T" marking for casemaker Pierre-Benjamin Tavernier, signed gilt cuvette secured by a screw near center and with apertures for winding and regulation, white enamel dial with "Breguet" signature at 6 and with a "No. 567 Breguet" secret signature below 12, KWKS (key not included with this lot), ruby cylinder escapement, balance with parachute shock and compensation curb system, standing barrel, gilt mvt, s#567 to cuvette, s#B 2876 and s#3400 inside case rear. Gross weight of assembled watch 52.3 dwt (81.4 g). Comes as pictured with its Breguet archive paper which reveals a fascinating history that begins with a very notable provenance, as this watch was sold as serial #2876 to Colonel Jenkinson in 1815 for the sum of 1400 Francs. We believe this individual to be Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1812 to 1827. The watch was then re-sold to Breguet in 1845 by a Capitaine Jenkinson for the sum of 500 Francs, who was presumably a relative as Robert Banks Jenkinson passed away in 1828 with no children and his heir at that time was a half-brother, Charles Cecil Cope Jenkinson, 3rd Earl of Liverpool. Following Breguet's reacquisition, the watch was entirely refurbished under the new number 567 and was re-cased by Breguet, into its present case as sold by the firm in 1852 to a Monsieur Hottinguer for the sum of 1000 Francs. Truly a fascinating piece with a rich history; if only watches could talk, this one would no doubt have some great stories to tell!
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function and tone, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with hl from 6 to center, some additional perimeter hls at 6, short fine scratch below 11, typical mild micro-fine scratches elsewhere; excellent hands, few small bits of oxide to tip and circle of minute hand; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine turning detail, cuvette friction fits loosely into place but its screw at center is not securing it and should be replaced for cuvette securement, rear hinge missing its end-caps; bow pivots freely, push shows little wear; good glass crystal.

CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function and tone, good primary chronograph and minute register function, inconsistent split-seconds function as several times during testing it operated properly with good reset but more frequently the reset was in error with either full failures to reset or incomplete resets and occasionally engagement of split-seconds caused watch to stop running after a brief time, overhaul needed for split-seconds function, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, spotting to plate surfaces including some fingerprint-type etching to repeat bridge, scattered micro-fine scratches; dial with perimeter fracture between 11 and 12 having very small associated surface flake at 11; "extra" dial with short hls above and below center hole, edge flake at 1, some wispy haze in its surface glaze evident in reflected light; lower sweep-seconds-hand is missing its tail and has a mild bend, upper sweep-seconds-hand with mild bend to its tail, other hands are excellent; case shows hardly any wear, few small scratches, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal with some looseness within bezel; box shows little wear, some typical mild scratches and nicks to its exterior, certificate with two tears at right perimeter.

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Cartier, Paris, very rare ultra-thin hunting case watch measuring only 3.1mm front-to-back width at its thickest point, 50mm, ultra-thin HC with mvt set into single-piece case body, front with blue enameled initials, inner front with French touchmarks and engraved name "Mizpah," original finely textured (taille-douce) pie-section silver dial, lever escapement, 18J, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#6182. Gross weight of assembled watch 26.7 dwt (41.6 g). A truly stunning timepiece, this style movement measures only 1.4mm in front-to-back width and the cased watch is an equally incredible only 3.1mm in front-to-back width. A good comparison to put these figures in context is a modern US quarter dollar coin, which measures 1.75mm in front-to-back width, and we have chosen to include two photographs of this piece alongside a quarter for this comparison. In this cataloger's opinion, though, the in-hand experience is even more impressive than what can be conveyed via photography as the sheer thinness of the piece in-hand is absolutely mind-blowing. We have chosen not to disassemble this watch to inspect its movement cosmetics, as the process of accessing the movement is fairly complex and delicate. Our firm previously handled this present example in 2008 and a photo under its dial was taken at that time and can be viewed at this link - https://www.auctions.jones-horan.com/0701/images/am38_g.jpg , and our firm has handled another example at the relatively close serial number of 6164 that features the same ultra-thin movement style and a photo of its movement removed from case can be viewed at this link - https://www.auctions.jones-horan.com/1402/images/17237_g.jpg
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, setting operating normally in clockwise direction but mvt with tendency to stop running if counter-clockwise setting is attempted so due to the delicacy of this ultra-thin mvt and the challenge of accessing the mvt we recommend user only set in clockwise direction, mvt not removed from case to inspect cosmetic condition; dial nearly flawless in visible portion with some mild surface spots which rate as not much above negligible; nearly mint hands; case shows hardly any wear, profuse micro-fine scratches, few infinitesimal pinpoint nicks, no dents or dings, enamel inlay fully present, case front opens somewhat short of 90 degrees (to approximately 75 degrees); tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

Grossmann HC with magnificent black armorial crest to its front, black enamel "A W" initials to its rear, signed gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-pin-set, lever escapement, likely 16J, gilt mvt, s#6145. Gross weight of assembled watch 75.0 dwt (116.6 g). A very rare watch, our consignor was informed in correspondence with Grossmann that they were aware of the current existence of seven examples of repeating Grossmann watches in museum and private collections, all of which were half-quarter-hour repeaters. The present example was not known among these examples and would be an eighth. This present example is highlighted by its beautifully enameled case, with the front bearing a baronial crest for the Wolfsramsdorf family which are, per Wikipedia, an old Vogtland-Meissen and Thuringian noble family with descendants listed as far back as the 10th century, members of nobility listed as far back as the 13th century, and an uninterrupted family line known from the 15th century. In all, a terrific piece for the collector of rare and unusual German watches.

Gross weight of assembled watch 92.9 dwt (144.5 g). E.W. Streeter was a manufacturing jeweler and dealer in watches who in the 1860s boasted of using machinery in his watch production. This claim was vigorously challenged at the time in the 'Horological Journal' as it was believed to be greatly exaggerated. Per our very knowledgeable consignor, the present watch movement appears likely to be a product of P. & A. Guye who were using machinery to produce small numbers of watches in the 1880s.
