DESCRIPTION: WW - Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar, Genève, ref 3940 1st series, circa 1987, micro rotor automatic, 36mm x 43mm to lug tips, 18mm lug width, original 18K yellow gold snap back case with advancing inset calendar pushers set along case perimeter, case back retains a Calatrava cross case back sticker indicating it is an automatic, black leather strap and 18K gold buckle signed Patek Philippe, original silver 1st series dial with applied gold indices and three inset sub-dials for date/moon phase, day/24 hour scale and month/leap year, 27J cal 240Q, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, Genève seals, case s#2838634, mvt s#770615, triple signed. Gross weight of assembled watch without strap 33.0 dwt (51.3 g). Includes Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Released in the midst of the quartz crisis and coming off the severe worldwide recession of the early 1980s, this model was truly a trailblazer, entirely new in every sense of the word. This ultra complicated perpetual calendar alongside its sibling, the 3970 perpetual calendar chronograph, ushered in a new era for the complicated watch. In a world where more and more companies were being lost to history, one can't underestimate the significance of this model for Patek Philippe themselves and the greater industry as a whole.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, perpetual calendar functions and advances properly, nearly flawless cosmetic mvt condition overall, no oxide; nearly flawless dial with light fade to 24 hour section as well as light dust on dial's surface, incredibly small marks on leap year disc at 2, next to the S in September and on dial perimeter next to the "26" dot, these are not visible unless highly scrutinized, two of these are only really visible under loupe magnification; mint hands; polished case shows little wear, hallmarks barely visible on side, small ding on bottom left lug; original crown shows hardly any wear; good sapphire crystal.

A lovely unadulterated Daytona that looks just as good today as the day it left Geneva. This is the exact model Paul Newman wore for many years following his gift of the famed "Paul Newman" dialed 6239 to his daughter's boyfriend. Note: At some point the original owner saw it as necessary to scribe the serial number on the bracelet as well as the last 4 digits on the physical movement plate (see image 10) and inside case back (see image 11).

This watch was originally purchased and used by an amateur racing driver who used it to time his laps when racing and at the drag strip (see photo 10); some additional provenance will be included with the sale including a letter from the original owner's daughter. The watch is fresh to market from the original owner's estate.

This watch has all the bells and whistles collectors dream about and leave letters to Santa for, including the original box and papers as well as the original matched chronometer certificate, fold out manual, and a bookmark dated 1964 which reads "Rockefeller for President."

DESCRIPTION: WW - Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer II, ref 1655, circa 1974, 40mm x 47mm to lug tips, 20mm lug width, original stainless steel screw back Oyster case with chamfered lugs, MK2 steel 24 hour bezel, original black MK2 dial with lume painted indices and a date aperture at 3, non-quickset, 26J cal 1570, s#3583726, triple signed, inside back ref 1655. Includes period inner and outer boxes as well as a hang tags. The Rolex Explorer II was released in 1971 and was specifically designed for spelunkers. Instead of every hour being lumed on the dial, every 2-1/2 minutes are lumed to correspond with the fixed bezel. The large arrow hand, which is not independently set, allowed the intended wearer to see if it was day or night at a glance in dark caves.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, 24 hour hand functions properly, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, no oxide on rotor or plates, light micro-fine scratches on rotor with the sides of one of the plates having a thin line of brass showing through; excellent-plus dial with two small oil spots at 2 and another oil spot at 5, lume is slightly discolored; nearly flawless hands with very light mark to straight sweep hand's center; polished head shows light wear, still retains strong visible lug chamfers, dings on backs of lugs from being worn on a bracelet; signed crown shows very little wear, good threads; excellent crystal; resealed for auction. A watch from when Seiko was pushing the boundaries as to what was possible with 1960s technology, this watch represents the ultimate diver for Seiko of that era. Fitted with a 25J, 36,000 bph automatic movement that included a quickset date and water resistance to 300M, which is 100 more than its Rolex counterpart. To most today this may not seem that out of the ordinary so to put this into perspective, Rolex released the 3035, their first men's high beat movement with a quickset, in 1977, and this feature didn't make its way into the Submariner until the early 1980s. The present lot is a true must-have for the vintage dive watch collector or the person who specializes in vintage or high end Seiko.

Includes a period inner and outer box as well as a hang tag. The Omega Speedmaster was chosen by NASA in 1965 after outperforming numerous other contenders in rigorous testing. They were first issued during the Gemini program using the older straight lug style 105.002. More Speedmasters were thereafter purchased, and starting with the Apollo program, astronauts were being issued the "Professional" marked 105.012's in a beefier case with crown and pusher protectors as seen here. They remain flight qualified by NASA to this day and accompany astronauts to the ISS regularly. Modern interpretations of this watch are still in production.

DESCRIPTION: WW - Tudor Oyster Shock Resisting, ref 4463, circa late 1950s, 34mm x 42mm to lug tips, 18mm lug width, original stainless steel screw back Oyster case, black leather strap, original silvered dial with radium painted Arabic numerals, 17J, s#531832, triple signed with inside back ref 4463. The serial number dates this watch much later than it's appearance would suggest, but numerous other pieces of this reference number have similarly long serial numbers for late '50s references.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, no oxide; dial with ample radium burns from the hands; excellent blued steel radium hands still as radioactive as the day they were new; lightly polished case shows light wear, no dents or dings; original signed crown shows hardly any wear, good threads; good crystal; resealed for auction.

Note this watch has a German day wheel so make sure you sprechen sie Deutsch. One of the most distinctive dial layouts; personally this cataloger has always thought that the Universal Tri-Compax punches well above its price point in almost every single way.
